چکیده
Abstract We report Zn-isotope compositions of garnet, clinopyroxene, and whole rocks for 14 Type I 10 II eclogites from the Roberts Victor kimberlite (Kaapvaal Craton, South Africa) that were previously analyzed Mg-O isotopes. are protoliths highly metasomatized I. Garnet clinopyroxene in have δ66Zn 0.14‰ to 0.50‰ 0.29‰ 0.58‰, respectively; reconstructed whole-rock is 0.24‰ 0.54‰, which higher than typical mantle values (0.16–0.20‰). Their heavy Zn- light Mg- O-isotope (δ26Mg = −1.1‰ −0.14‰, δ18O 2.3‰ 4.9‰) cannot originate subducted, carbonate-rich, altered oceanic crust, enriched Zn-O Mg The low may be inherited parental melts derived low-δ18O sources like those produced Weltevreden komatiites Kaapvaal Craton. high δ26Mg reflect diffusion-driven Zn-Mg–isotope exchange between peridotites during their emplacement deep lithosphere. 0.03‰ 0.43‰ garnet 6‰ 9.1‰ but show more scatter inter-mineral fractionation II, reflecting incomplete equilibration later metasomatism by carbonatitic-to-kimberlitic melts. Our evidence multiple isotopes thus suggests might crystallized deep-seated at depths.

Seismic constraints on the depth and composition of the mantle keel beneath the Kaapvaal craton
S–P travel-time residuals and receiver-function images are used to infer the Vp/Vs (compressional to shear wave velocity) ratio of the lithospheric mantle beneath southern African and the topography of the underlying 410-km discontinuity. Low Vp/Vs ratios provide evidence independent of geochemical observations for a highly depleted root (Mg#f92–94) beneath the Kaapvaal craton. The receiver-fun...
متن کاملMetasomatized Kyanite-eclogites xenoliths from a southern Indian kimberlite
Kimberlites discovered so far in southern India are restricted to the Eastern Block of the Dharwar Craton and are distributed in three fields: Wajrakarur, Narayanpet, and Raipur. As summarized recently by Paul et al. (2006) and Patel et al. (2006), known kimberlite pipes in the Wajrakarur kimberlite field (WKF), which lies at the western margin of the Cuddapah Basin, occur in three clusters: Wa...
متن کاملNature of the Archean midcrust in the core of the Vredefort Dome, Central Kaapvaal Craton, South Africa
Extreme uplift associated with the formation of the 2.02 Ga Vredefort dome has exposed a substantial cross section through the crystalline early Archean basement complex rocks of the Kaapvaal craton. The rocks comprise polydeformed high-grade tonalite–trondhjemite–granodiorite (TTG) gneisses, migmatites and late-tectonic intrusive granitoids that straddle the upper amphibolite-to granulite–faci...
متن کاملMass-independent sulfur of inclusions in diamond and sulfur recycling on early Earth.
Populations of sulfide inclusions in diamonds from the Orapa kimberlite pipe in the Kaapvaal-Zimbabwe craton, Botswana, preserve mass-independent sulfur isotope fractionations. The data indicate that material was transferred from the atmosphere to the mantle in the Archean. The data also imply that sulfur is not well mixed in the diamond source regions, allowing for reconstruction of the Archea...
متن کاملElectrical conductivity of continental lithospheric mantle from integrated geophysical and petrological modeling: Application to the Kaapvaal Craton and Rehoboth Terrane, southern Africa
[1] The electrical conductivity of mantle minerals is highly sensitive to parameters that characterize the structure and state of the lithosphere and sublithospheric mantle, and mapping its lateral and vertical variations gives insights into formation and deformation processes. We review state‐of‐the‐art conductivity models based on laboratory studies for the most relevant upper mantle minerals...
